Women’s Health Queensland Wide (Women’s Health) is a statewide health promotion, information and education service, run for women by women. We promote women’s health by working with individuals, community groups and organisations and government. We believe that all aspects of women’s lives affect their health and wellbeing. We aim to provide a range of options for women so they can make informed choices about their own health. We value women’s diversity, experience and knowledge.
We provide balanced information, independent of health care provider interests.
Operating since 1982, and incorporated in 1985, the organisation continues to develop as a leader in the provision of quality health information for women and health practitioners throughout Queensland.
Women's Health Queensland Wide Inc. is a not for profit incorporated association, primarily funded by the State and Federal Governments, with funding administered by Queensland Health.
History
Previously known as Women's Health Centre Brisbane Inc., the organisation has been a leading women's health agency since 1982. The centre was renamed Women's Health Queensland Wide Inc in 1997, to reflect the scope of our services. To read more about the organisation's 21 year history, click here.
Our Vision
Every woman in Queensland , irrespective of her circumstances, experiences better health and wellbeing through access to quality health information.
Objects
- To actively promote and advance the health and wellbeing of women of diverse backgrounds and needs.
- To provide direct relief from the burden of ill health in women by supplying independent information on a range of health practices and care options.
- To facilitate women's decision making in relation to the prevention or control of disease and support informed access to quality health care services.
- To provide broad based education to individuals, carers, service providers and the wider community to improve women's health and increase the capacity of others to support women's health needs.
- To source and disseminate information on current research and trends and participate in and support ongoing research into the prevention, causes, and treatment of disease.
- To promote women's health through a holistic approach that emphasises the value of a woman's own experience and issues affecting her health and wellbeing.
- To promote women's health by engaging in activities that raise awareness of women's health issues and that inform policy development processes within the wider community.
Our Services
Health Information Line
Our statewide Health Information Line is staffed by women's health nurses and midwives. Women and health practitioners can contact the service for up to date health information and referral to health services. Staff support women by assisting them in making informed decisions about their health. All phone calls and emails are confidential. Women from outside Brisbane can call our free 1800 number. We also have a TTY number for women with hearing difficulties and can arrange a telephone interpreting service.
Library
Our free lending library offers a select range of books on major women's health topics. Topic-based booklists are available for browsing on our website, or can be posted out; books can be requested by phone or email, and are posted to borrowers.
In addition, Women's Health's access to electronic databases and national networks of health libraries allows the provision of specific, research-based and up to date information. For women who want to read more widely about their health, a guide to other library services is also available.
Resources
We have a range of factsheets and booklets, produced by us or by other health organisations. The resources are listed on an order form available from the centre and on our website. Our quarterly publication, Health Journey contains articles on topical women's health issues, research updates, details of our activities and other relevant information.
Website
The website provides full text versions of our factsheets, booklets and newsletters as well as information on current women's health issues. The site also features student factsheets designed for assignment purposes, library book lists, 'ask a health question' facility and information on our health education programs.
Health Education
We conduct health education programs on a variety of women's health matters to both consumers and health care practitioners across Queensland. The activities consist of seminars, forums and small group presentations. To a large extent, we use innovative technologies, including videoconferencing, to deliver these programs.
Our staff are available to speak to community organisations, health services, women's groups and tertiary institutions on a range of topics.
